Mark Zuckerberg Goes To The Movies
This very day, October 1, 2010, there’s a movie being released about Mark Zuckerberg. And, while at some point I’ll probably end up seeing The Social Network, I’ve been assured the film has absolutely nothing to do with the last twenty-three years of my life as an Indiana bankruptcy attorney. You might say (as one of the Columbus bankruptcy lawyers who works in the Zuckerberg bankruptcy law offices there explains the situation to his pals) that all I share with the other Mark Zuckerberg is our name.
Predicted to win an Oscar, The Social Network movie is an account of the founding of Facebook. The New York Times’ early movie review is called “Millions of Friends, but Not Very Popular,” while the teaser poster for the movie reads “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.”
As you might imagine, as an Indiana bankruptcy lawyer who has helped some 30,000 Hoosiers file personal bankruptcy in Indiana, and helped thousands of entrepreneurs file small business bankruptcy in Indiana, I have some friends of my own. I even have a page on Facebook! Now that I think of it, there are thousands of others for whom I’ve provided payday loan debt help, student loan debt help, and, particularly over the past three years, help to stop foreclosure on their homes.
I understand the movie The Social Network casts Mark Zuckerberg as insensitive and coldly calculating, with his success leading to legal complications. Whether those descriptions are accurate or not, I know my own work offering bankruptcy services in Indiana is dedicated to helping clients avoid legal complications.
And, far from being insensitive or calculating, I believe there’s another special responsibility good bankruptcy attorneys in Indiana need to take on, which is to treat clients who need debt help with respect and sympathy. I know how important it is to just listen to people when they need to talk about their business or their family or their health problems. After all, help isn’t just about knowing the law – it’s about knowing that “there, but for the grace of God, go I.”
Nothing if not gracious, I hasten to congratulate my namesake:
“Hats off (or hoodies off) to you, Mark Zuckerberg! Maybe someday I’ll be in the movies, too……”
